Olena Diachenko's Leotards Look Simply Stunning, Only on Her

Even gymnasts don't look as thin as they really are on camera. Very few can wear one-color, long leotards well unless they have,  well, essentially, the body of the super model.

In fact, I don't think anyone after Tamara Erofeeva has been able to pull of this look except maybe Daria Kushnerova, who retired way too early. Before that, Olga Gontar and Ekaterina Serebryanskaya both looked out of this world in all white in the 1990s.

Olena Diachenko is that one-in-a-million woman.  She has been wearing all black, all white and dark red with some sparkle, but, essentially, with clean lines that emphasize her amazing legs. I don't think anyone else in the world elite can show this look quite so successfully. I know Mazur is next in line to be the top gymnast in the Ukraine but I really hope this girl gets her chance because she just makes the hardest things look so graceful! She just dazzles with her gorgeous silhouette and fills the carpet with her elegance.

Anna Rizatdinova Withdraws from Grand Prix Kiev Due to Foot Injury

According to the source below, Anna has a foot injury that seems to have bothered her for a while, but got worse recently.

Ganna only performed a hoop routine at the event and did not appear for the other three performances. Coincidentally, Ukraine's number 2, Viktoria Mazur has stated in recent interviews that she is ready to be the new leader of the Ukrainian national team. Perhaps Ganna's withdrawal was not that unexpected after all.

While it would be wonderful to see Viktoria, who is extremely beautiful and talented, blossom into Ukraine's new prima, it is highly unlikely that Viktoria will reach the level that Ganna has been demonstrating in recent years. At least not during this season. This season was a chance for Ganna to take number one in the world after Kudryavtseva (and most likely Mamun) from Russia retired. It seems, at this stage, that luck is not on Ganna's side.

Still, it is too early to jump to conclusions before we have heard from Ganna herself. Let's wish her the best of health going forward!

Happy Birthday to Tamara Yerofeeva!

The 2001 world all around champion Tamara Yerofeeva is one of the gymnasts who continued to perform long after she retired from gymnastics. She is part of the cast of V-The Ultimate Variety Show where she dazzles with her flexibility, her hoop skills, and her overall graceful presence.

She has stayed in amazing shape after retiring and can be a role model for many as a dedicated performer. During her career, Tamara also won the  all around gold at the 2001 Summer Universiade  won the 2002 Grand Prix final, and took 6th place at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

Soldatova Dominates, Linoy Shines for Israel, the Ukrainian Teams Needs New Decisions

The Grand Prix in Eliat, Israel, brought no surprises but it did confirm that Linoy Ashram from Israel now takes the stage with an absolutely bright and original light of her own. She is fast, she is clean, her jumps are "explosive," and.... she actually moves with the music. Linoy is the best gymnast in Israel right now. The judges will, eventually, recognize this.

In the meantime, for several years now, the Ukraine has chosen to trust Viktoria Mazur, and Viktoria Mazur, who is an absolutely elegant, talented, beautiful girl, has never really had a competition where she did not make at least one completely disastrous mistakes. This time it was worse because, in the spirit of very poor decision-making, she went and picked up the "reserve" apparatus, while her hoop was still on the carpet and she actually thought she should perform with one hoop, while the other one is lying in the middle of the carpet.  It would have been one thing to lose the original hoop outside the carpet but not going after it when it is 2 steps away? I have never seen this.

Here she is, holding one hoop and the other is right there. It would be like an artistic gymnast getting off the beam and going on another one.

If she had been inexperienced, I would still think it is highly unusual, where by "unusual, " I mean: not logical at all. But she did it and  she has been in competition for about 5 years now.

Either she needs to get some additional training that works with her psychological stamina, teaches how to react to the unexpected and how to avoid disasters like this, or, honestly, in all of the Ukraine, there has to be another elegant, talented gymnast like her.

The judges were not impressed:

Really, there is no excuse for someone who was born with quite obvious physical advantages over others to keep making poor decisions at every competition.

And, then, speaking of decisions, I still feel sad that Soldatova did not go to the Olympics. She is beautiful in everything she does, a true spectacle of a gymnast, with strength, grace, and passion all at once. I can't get enough of her. She brings more amplitude and more amazement every time she performs.

Of course, I always root for the underdogs, too, and, in this case,  Elizaveta Gamalejeva from Latvia is a great choice for a gymnast who keeps getting better, though still shy of the top spots. She did a very expressive ball routine where, for the first time, I think the music choice did justice to her personal charm and presence on the carpet. If she had cleaner lines, she would get higher scores, but I can tell she loves what she does. And that is always inspiring.

5 Favorite Routines from the Ukraine

I thought I'd share 5 routines that I really love from gymnasts form the Ukraine. You may have seen them and forgotten some!

5. This routine would be lovely, just take away the clubs; they are in her way of being absolutely beautiful:

Too bad we could not watch Daria Kushnerova more as an individual gymnast.

4. With clubs, but much, much riskier:

I have other Vitrichenko routines that I have enjoyed but this one is my favorite.

3. An old routine, from more than 20 years ago, which I think is excellent, except for the jumps:

2.As for this routine, only about half a million people have seen it, and maybe more need to see it:

1.Finally, my favorite routine by a gymnast from the Ukraine, of all times:

What a Wonderful World (Championship)

The world championship in Kiev brought fair results that pleased many, if not most fans. As a fan, I am pleased because two of the gymnasts, who I wrote about back in 2011, Mamun from Russia (ball and clubs champion), and Narkevich from Belarus (as part of the Russian group) became world champions. I liked them a lot back then and I am very happy for them now.

Yana Kudryavtseva, on the other hand, was the absolutely uncontested and incomparable world champion. Before her last routine, she actually gestured to the Russian national coach, as if to say, "Don't worry, I'll win it."

My other favorite, Melitina Staniouta, came back with three bronze medals and I hope to see her win gold, too, she deserves it. How about the host country and everyone's favorite Ukrainians? I was not surprised to see Ganna Rizatdinova win with hoop. Hoop is by far her best routine this season:

And Alina Maksymenko got  a bronze with clubs, too, after numerous errors, small and large, that she made in her other routines.

Still, she was smiling the moment she stepped out in front of the audience loves her so much. I don't know if she is planning to retire. I think she is still young and she can work on focusing better and performing cleaner routines. But it seems she thoroughly enjoyed herself anyway.

New stars have risen, too, on the world gymnastics horizon. One of them is the Greek Varvara Filiou, who I have really liked lately. She impressed me A LOT during the European Championships,  the Mediterranean games and the Kazan Universiade. She placed 4th with ribbon at this World Championship so I hope many medals await her, and overall, a great career full of health and fan love. Congratulations!

World Games in Cali: Captured Moments

Ganna Rizatdinova held on to the hoop and won gold in the final but errors from other gymnasts gave her this chance.

Charopa from Belarus did a very strong ball routine and is probably the skinniest girl at the World Games

My absolute favorite, Melitina, looked magically inspired. GOLD with ball!

Tori Filanovsky from Israel is so energetic and fun to watch, even with her errors.

What is missing from this picture? Maksymenko finished without her hoop. Oh, pity!

Yeah, she regrets it and so do we.

Melitina could have won this final if she had been more confident. Her face says it.

The only non-Russian speaking girl in the Top 8 is Carolina Rodriguez from Spain. But, boy, did she wear the most sparkle.

I really liked Nazarenkova from Russia. She is very elegant and she deserved the hoop bronze. Lovely leos, too!  Purple isn't great on everyone but she is just too pretty not to make it work.

Trubnikova, the other Russian, disappointed. Someone burn that leotard, and get rid of her circus music, pleaaaase!

Maksymenko looked fiery red with ball.

She knows that the audience LOVES her. How can you not love someone so charming!

How do I even caption this shot?

Go Ganna! Go Ukraine!
