Maria Petrova Still Has the Upper Hand
I found a funny video from an internal competition in Bulgaria which shows Maria Petrova catching a wondering ribbon from her desk as a judge. Next to her, the other Bulgarian three time-world champion, Maria Gigova (in the middle), is trying to not to get hit with the falling ribbon. Silvia Miteva is laughing next to her.

Happy Birthday to the Absolute Queen
My favorite gymnast of all times, three-time world champion Maria Petrova ( 1993, 1994, 1995), also a winner of the European titles (1992,1994), one European cup (1993), the SummerUniversiade title in 1995, and two 5th places at the Olympics (1992, 1996).
While she was most celebrated for her hoop and ball, this less known routine with rope remains very exciting to me because of the choice of music and choreography and the amazing work with the rope.

Happy Birthday to My Greatest Gymnast Inspiration!
Today, on Maria Petrova's birthday, I remember with joy and nostalgia the days when I brought her flowers at competitions, took many pictures of her on my first camera, and lined up to receive her autograph. From the first moment I watched her, I knew she would achieve greatness in this sport.
On this magical day, I would like to remember one of her oldest routines.This routine is from 1991. Only two years before she presented her famous Carmina Burana hoop. The 1991 routine is not as dramatic and polished but it is full of potential. Also, this is one of VERY few times I have seen Maria with a pony tail. :-)
To all fans of Maria, I say: cheers! Believe in your inspiring stars.

Happy Birthday to the Queen of Rhythmic!
Today is Maria Petrova's birthday and I don't know where to start.
She has inspired me greatly and shaped my sense of beauty, style and success to an extent where she is not just an influence, or a role model, she is a source of admiration and joy. Many, many years ago, in 1995, I went to see Maria in practice and, with all of my lunch money that I had saved for months, I bought her this breath-takingly elegant bouquet of white lillies. The flowers were so lavish and beautiful that, when I got into the bus to go the gym where she trained, everyone moved to make room for me. Two people even offerred me a seat. Everyone tiptoed around me so as not to damage the flowers.
This is what beauty does to people: it makes you care.
I have been caring for rhythmic gymnastics for over 20 years now. Because of Maria, I think I always will.
Here she is, more beautiful than any flower, though in black:
I will always be grateful to Maria for making every movement in her routines carry emotional meaning. I will always be grateful to her for never saying "No" to a child or teenager who asked for her autograph. I will be grateful for her for becoming a fair-minded and influential judge, and just for the talented, strong, and graceful person that she is.

Baby Nadia As a Gymnastics Fan
By popular request, I am posting here the pictures I took of my daugher Nadia in various gymnastics scenarios. Nadia was born on 07/11/2012, at which point she was 19 inches long (48 cm) and weighed 7 lbs and 4 ounces ( about 3 kg 300 grams). She has grown a lot ever since, reaching 74.4 cm (29.75 incheS) and 21 lbs 2 ounces (about 9 kg 600 kg). She looks like she will grow tall so I think I'd encourage her to pick up basketball and beach volleyball, maybe not gymnastics. But she is Maria Petrova's and Evgenia' Kanaeva's smallest fan! :-) And I would add: Olga Gontar's smallest and cutest fan. :-)
On these pictures, she is 5 days old with the rope and ball, 4 months with the makeshift "clubs" and about 6 months old with the ribbon. No hoop just yet. :-)
